The Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) is a program designed for small employers who wish to offer health and/or dental insurance to their employees in an affordable, flexible, and convenient manner. Generally, businesses or non-profit organizations with 1 to 50 employees are eligible to purchase SHOP insurance. Unlike individual health insurance, SHOP allows employers to offer coverage to their employees at any time of the year, without having to wait for an Open Enrollment Period.
There are several reasons why offering SHOP coverage can be beneficial for small businesses:
- Choice and flexibility: Employers can choose to offer one plan or provide employees with multiple options. They can also decide whether to offer health coverage, dental coverage, or both. Additionally, employers have the flexibility to determine the amount they contribute towards their employees’ premiums and whether dependents are eligible for coverage. They can also set waiting periods for new employees before they can enroll.
- Convenient information: Employers can access all the necessary information about their SHOP insurance options on the HealthCare.gov website. They can compare plans, prices, and determine if they qualify for SHOP.
- Assistance from agents or brokers: Employers have the option to work with a SHOP-registered agent or broker who can help them with the enrollment process. They can either use their current agent/broker or find a new one.
- Small Business Health Care Tax Credit: Eligible small employers enrolled in SHOP insurance may qualify for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit. To be eligible, businesses must have fewer than 25 full-time equivalent employees with an average annual salary of about $56,000 or less.
Enrolling in SHOP insurance can be done in two ways: directly contacting the insurance company or enrolling with the assistance of a SHOP-registered agent or broker.
For additional information and resources, employers can visit the HealthCare.gov website or contact the SHOP Call Center for assistance.
